On Writing and Procrasti-cleaning

One fun thing about remote writing/editing: You can often tell how gnarly a book chapter’s been based on how clean and tidy our home is.

But while *procrasti-cleaning* is definitely a thing, even for professional writers, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. If, like most things, it’s done right.

We all get lost in cycles of non-work. Sitting and staring. Inefficiently drudging through another uninspired page. Refusing to pull yourself away from the keyboard.

It helps to get up and clear some literal cobwebs.

To see tangible, immediate results of labor, whether your thing is vacuum lines or a pristine pantry.

Clearing your physical space really can help clear your mind.

Predictable, productive activities sometimes invite moments of clarity or insight.

But let’s not get carried away.

Be deliberate.

Put time limits on your productive distractions, and stick to them.

If the days keep slipping by and all you have to show for it is sparkling floor tiles and an alphabetized spice rack—I can help.
